“Present State of Civilization and Christianity Among the Indians”
This is an excerpt from “Removal of the Indians: Examination of Gov. Cass on the Same Subject; and a Statement of Facts in Regard to Their Civil and Religious Improvement” by Jeremiah Evarts, George Barrell Cheever, Convers Francis an article from American Monthly Magazine from 1830. The article discusses the view of the Indian character in regards to adopting Christianity and looks specifically at the Cherokee, Chickasaw, and Choctaw. It details the results of studies conducted by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions and looks at statistics like the number of religious texts in Native American languages, reports from Indian schools, and testimony from missionaries.
