“When We Lived East”: Ohio as a Lens
The State of Ohio was established by the United States federal government on March 1, 1803, as the first state carved out of the Northwest Territory, following the path established in the Northwest Ordinance of 1787. As the first state in this territory, it became a proving ground for the federal and state governments as they implemented their removal policies. For this reason, Ohio and its history is often seen as the blueprint for American Indian Removal in the United States.
